Anne Johann studied at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, where she earned
her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with Highest Honors (1980). She
subsequently pursued classes in painting the figure in oil at the
National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts, New York City, with
Ronald Sherr (1983-1984), and later, attended a portraiture workshop
with Daniel Greene in North Salem, NY (1991).
The interaction
between land and water became a fascination early in the artist's
career. The Hudson River, a source of inspiration observed since
childhood in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, makes its presence throughout the oeuvre of her work. Trips
to the United Kingdom in the early 1990's resulted in a series of oils
of the English National Seashore in South Shields. By the 2000's, the
coast of Maine became the focus. Both oils and watercolors were produced
in the mid-coast region of the state.
Anne Johann's work has
received many awards and grants, and has been exhibited in galleries and
national juried exhibitions. Grants include two ArtsWestchester
municipal challenge grants for murals (www.artswestchester.org),
one in conjunction with the Town of Cortlandt, and one with the Town of
Ossining; and a grant and residency with the Vermont Studio Center,
Johnson, VT (www.vermontstudiocenter.org).
Jurors selecting the work for juried exhibitions have included Lisa
