I was on a painting trip to Monhegan Island in Maine and while out scouting for a place to set up and paint, I came upon this view looking out to the open ocean. I didn't paint there that day, but I did photograph it with the intention of painting the scene when I returned to my studio. This I did. I wanted to capture the feel of the rocky coast with its wind swept trees. Other plein air works from that trip were helpful references for color and value.
